This piece was influenced by an interview we did with the owners of ADT Alarm Systems. According to case studies, most of home stealing is done by amateur burglars. This is quite a relief for most home owners. Thieves will not easily break into your homes if you do these simple measures:

  • Think and discover the weak spots in your house by planning on how to break into your own home. By brainstorming how to get in your house as an intruder, you will notice the lapses of the security system in your house.
  • Always lock your house even if you will just be away for three minutes buying something from a store that is only across your house. You need to discipline yourself that every time you leave your house, you should lock it up. You never really know when a burglar might come.
  • When you decide to move into a new house, you need to change all of your locks.
  • If you are equipped with an alarm system in your house, you should see to it that the wirings are concealed. Thieves especially the professional ones could easily disable your alarm system once they know that you have one.
  • When you are not at home, your house should appear as if there are people inside. You can make use of timers to switch on and off the lights and radio.
  • If your alarm is malfunctioning, have it fixed immediately. Once it is fixed, tell your friends and neighbors about it.
  • This is very important: if you accidentally misplace and lose your keys, your locks should be immediately replaced.
  • If you hire the services of professional home cleaners, make sure that you know the person or that the person has a reputable background. There are many instances that house owners become victims of burglary from house cleaners.
  • Do not keep spare keys in areas where it is an obvious place to hide like under the doormat or inside your mailbox. Have it securely wrapped in a foil and bury it somewhere where it is easy for you to locate and difficult for strangers to trace.
  • Constantly keep in touch with neighbors regarding suspicious activities in your neighborhood.
